Intelligent design for neuro care facility

A look at the complex building services design for a new ward building at a specialist facility in Leamington Spa which treats neurological conditions caused by acquired brain injuries.

Nik Chambers, operations director at building services consultancy, Greenways, discusses the mechanical and electrical installation for a new two-storey ward building recently built for the Central England Rehabilitation Unit (CERU), a specialist facility at Leamington Spa Hospital for treating neurological conditions caused by acquired brain injuries. He explains how the building services design for the recently completed centre answered both the clinical requirements of the specialist environment it provides, and the environmental and operational cost goals of South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Anational centre of excellence that has been treating patients with neurological conditions for over 20 years, CERU offers neuro rehabilitation services for patients from across the UK. With the new build at Leamington Spa Hospital, it is now the country’s largest Level 1-accredited rehabilitation facility, providing 42 beds, and ‘the most advanced, goal-oriented treatments available’.

The new two-storey unit has been constructed on the footprint of an older, single-storey adult rehabilitation ward. The main contractors were Speller Metcalf. Despite the increase in size, however, the new building has a significantly lower carbon footprint. Energy consumption has been reduced by 70%, providing significant operational cost savings for the Trust, in line with its environmental and efficiency strategies.
