Negating the need to switch off for periodic inspection and test

Continuous monitoring of electrical infrastructure in hospitals can negate the need to shut down for periodic inspection and testing, as required in the IET Wiring Regulations, BS7671.

Bender residual current monitoring (RCM) monitors and identifies faults down to 2 mA, delivering early warning of developing issues – enabling preventive maintenance and analysis, ‘which helps improve uptime and system availability, and reduces the cost of maintenance’.

Bender has implemented RCM within leading UK healthcare facilities. The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in London’s St John’s Wood has increased resilience and monitoring with Bender intelligent monitoring solutions. RCM has successfully proven to continuously monitor the health of lighting circuits in key areas served by non-IPS conventional TN-S power systems.

The hospital’s director of Projects, Steve Kimp, said: “Bender UK has been very proactive in helping to raise the standard of electrical protection and resilience at the hospital. Power availability is an absolutely critical element in running a site like ours which operates 24/7.”

Bender said: “Periodic inspection and testing dictates that the integrity of the insulation must be verified, which usually involves shutdown. Medical IT systems are typically installed only in critical Group 2 medical locations, with remaining electrical installation usually earthed TN-S systems. BS7671: 2018 section 651.2 states that where a circuit is permanently monitored by RCM or IMD, it is not necessary to measure insulation resistance if the functioning of the RCM or IMD is correct.”

Confirmation of the installation status can be managed using RCM in conjunction with Bender’s cloud software – POWERSCOUT, which fulfils the need for accurate record keeping. Bender describes RCM as ‘a compliant solution proven and installed in healthcare and industrial applications worldwide’.
