Biometrics can help protect and safeguard

Shaun Oakes, managing director at ievo, a north-east England-based manufacturer of biometric fingerprint readers, argues that growing use of biometrics technology can improve security and afford better protection to premises, valuable items, and people, across an ever-busier NHS.

Within the NHS, security is always a primary concern for patients, staff, and data. Today’s service must contend not only with the demands posed by an ever-increasing and ageing population against a backdrop of tight fiscal constraints, but also with growing pressure on beds. According to the NHS Confederation, the NHS deals with over one million patients every 36 hours across the UK, and, based on 2016 data, has seen an increase in hospital admissions of 28% over the past decade. 

Alongside putting extra pressure on hospitals and other healthcare facilities, the rise in admissions brings with it a potential for greater vulnerabilities in a number of areas. For example: 

Against such a backdrop, good security measures and accountability across the service are becoming increasingly important – whether through restricting physical access, enhanced record keeping, or monitoring of the workforce.
