Acrovyn by Design helps to create a calm environment in a new Neonatal Unit

Located within Glan Clwyd Hospital, a new £18m Sub-Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Centre (SuRNICC) provides care for premature and sick new-born babies from across North Wales.

The design of the unit meets the latest neonatal healthcare standards in terms of space allowance and optimum room layouts, as well as noise, light and temperature controls. Alongside well-equipped clinical spaces, the facility includes on-site accommodation for parents wishing to stay with their babies, in line with principles of family-centred care.

A calm and non-institutional environment has been created in the unit through careful specification of colours and patterns for interior finishes and furnishings. In clinical areas the Acrovyn range of wall protection solutions from Construction Specialties (CS) has been used to ensure longevity and ease of maintenance.

Bespoke graphics depicting trees and colourful butterfly motifs were incorporated into Acrovyn by Design wall panels, fitted to full wall height in cot rooms, waiting and play areas, to brighten the environment. Acrovyn by Design is a durable wall covering offering complete design freedom, and high quality image reproduction. The artwork is protected by a clear layer of impact resistant Acrovyn Sheet, which means that cleaning and scrubbing won’t affect the image, making it suitable for protecting walls in hygiene sensitive and/or high traffic areas.

Door leaves, door frames and architraves in clinical areas were faced with through-coloured, textured and impact resistant Acrovyn Sheet, which will significantly prolong their lifespan and minimise maintenance requirements. Two complementary colours were chosen to achieve over 30 points LRV colour contrast between door frames and door faces to ensure design code compliance.

In addition, a selection of Acrovyn profiles was used to protect walls and corners from impact damage caused by movement of beds and equipment. In clinical corridors HRB4C hand/crash rails were installed at mid wall height with FR225 rub rails at just above skirting level. Acrovyn Sheet was applied to walls in disposal holds, and all external corners were fitted with severe duty, Acrovyn corner guards to full or dado height depending on protection requirements.

The comprehensive wall protection scheme specified for the project, fitted by CS’ in-house installation team Conspec Contracts, will ensure that the unit remains attractive, damage free and easy to maintain for years to come.
