NHSPS marks decade ‘supporting NHS customers and communities’ alongside service’s 75th anniversary

NHS Property Services (NHSPS), which employs over 5,000 frontline staff, is celebrating 10 years of serving patients, customers, and local communities, ‘with facilities management, property expertise, and transformation of the NHS estate’ across England.

A key advisor to NHS organisations on all property matters, NHSPS has developed significantly as an organisation over the last decade, which it says has enabled its customers ‘to focus on what they do best – providing excellent care to patients’.  To celebrate the ‘milestone birthday’, as well as the NHS’s 75th birthday today (Wednesday 5 June), NHSPS colleagues across the business – including one team member with 50 years’ NHS service – have been featured in a short film highlighting some of their ‘exemplary work’.

NHSPS has a 2,755-strong property portfolio valued at over £3 bn – ranging from listed buildings to integrated health campuses. The organisation said: “By working in innovative ways and collaborating with NHS teams locally, regionally, and nationally, they have been able to support the delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan, providing buildings which meet the needs of patients accessing new models of care.”

Martin Steele, CEO at NHSPS (pictured), said: “The last 10 years have seen significant change across the NHS, and I am incredibly proud of the role that NHSPS colleagues have played in helping to support that change. Our ambition is to continue focusing on putting our customers at the heart of everything we do, working in partnership with our NHS colleagues, and enabling them to deliver excellent care to the patients and communities they serve.”

Key achievements realised by NHSPS since 2013 include:

  • Reinvesting more than £504 m into the NHS from property sales.
  • Enabling 8,023 new homes to be built.
  • Providing 2.4 million ‘Open Space’ hours of patient care.
  • Completing 260 ‘Healthy Place’ projects benefiting over three million patients.
  • Reviewing over 4,000 planning consultation documents.
  • Saving the NHS £38 m through energy efficiency programmes.
  • Launching 75 social prescribing hubs.
  • Delivering the first ICS (Integrated Care System) estates strategy for Cambridge

& Peterborough NHS.

  • Developing a workforce of 6,000 colleagues who keep NHS buildings in working order.
  • Supporting the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide 1,000 additional beds, set up 23 mass vaccination sites, and 227 Primary Care Network vaccination sites, as well as conducting over 10,000 deep cleans.

The NHSPS10 film  tells the story of some of NHSPS’s  longest-serving colleagues working across the country, and the role they have played over the past decade to support NHS customers and partners. Visit https://vimeo.com/842202853 to view the film.

Today, 5 July 2023, marks 75 years of the National Health Service, which treats over a million people a day in England. On its founding in 1948, the NHS was the first universal health system to be available to all, free at the point of delivery. Today, NHSPS says, ‘nine in 10 people agree that healthcare should be free of charge, while more than four in five agree care should be available to everyone, and that the NHS makes them most proud to be British.’
