Recorra adds electric Ro-Ro to fleet

London and South East based waste management company, Recorra, have added the UK's first fully electric P 230E Roll-on Roll-off (eRoRo) vehicle by Scania to its fleet, making it one of the first of its kind in the country.

The company says: ‘This marks a true carbon-reduction innovation, with the traditionally high-emission trucks used to transport heavy containers and compactors. The new Scania eRoRo delivers a zero-tailpipe emissions solution for large-scale waste collection, combining power, reliability, and sustainability.’

The new fully electric P 230E ‘sets a milestone for low-carbon waste logistics by delivering a zero-tailpipe emissions solution for transporting heavy RoRo containers. Electrifying a vehicle of this size has long been a challenge due to the high energy demands and need for powerful batteries, making this breakthrough both technically and economically significant. By combining advanced technology with specialised equipment, the P 230E makes even the heaviest waste transport cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable’.

Recorra chose to work with Scania because of their proactive approach and proven expertise in electric vehicle manufacturing.

The Scania P 230E eRoRo is equipped with a 230 kW electric motor and a 400 kWh battery, delivering the power and reliability of a traditional heavy goods vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions. With capacity to carry full compactors, a maximum legal laden weight of 28 tonnes, and full air suspension, it offers robust performance for large-scale waste collection in urban areas, without emissions. Having undergone rigorous testing, the vehicle is now integrated in Recorra’s fleet.

The eRoRo enables Recorra to deliver carbon-free heavy waste collections for businesses across London.

“The addition of this BEV hook loader [eRoRo] will strengthen our fleet, supporting both our environmental values and the evolving needs of our customers. At Recorra, we lead with innovation, particularly in driving towards our net zero target and decarbonisation. Our goal is to reduce our emissions and our customers’ emissions without compromising on service,” said Kevin Stephenson, Recorra Group Director of Fleet Management.

This innovation ‘demonstrates how even the heaviest forms of waste transport can move toward a cleaner and more sustainable future’, adds the company.
