Morgan Sindall has been appointed by West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust to deliver a £25 m Endoscopy Unit at Newmarket Community Hospital.
The construction works are valued at £15 m. The purpose-built facility is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
The two-storey, 2,300 sq m development will expand diagnostic and specialist care provision in the area, providing endoscopy services alongside paediatric audiology and training facilities. The Trust expects the new unit to improve access to care for residents of Newmarket and surrounding communities, while easing pressure on West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds and helping to reduce waiting times across the region.
Procured through the Procure23 framework, the scheme will include four endoscopy rooms, 16 pre- and post-procedure preparation rooms, two audiology suites, two training rooms and a range of supporting clinical spaces. The project team includes Medical Architecture, ETA Projects as mechanical and electrical engineer, and Rossi Long as structural and civil engineer.
The building will be constructed using a traditional steel frame with SFS, PCC planks and metal decking, finished with a brickwork façade.
Morgan Sindall will deliver the scheme within a live hospital environment, coordinating closely with the Trust to maintain day-to-day operations.
The design also responds to site constraints, preserving existing trees and incorporating the current retaining wall.
Modern methods of construction (MMC) will be used throughout, with a pre-manufactured value of 75%, exceeding NHS requirements.
Digital tools will support quality and delivery, while sustainability measures include an all-electric design, air source heat pumps, rooftop photovoltaic panels and a target of diesel-free construction.
The contractor has also committed to delivering social value through apprenticeships, student placements and a locally focused supply chain.
The Endoscopy Unit will sit adjacent to the Community Diagnostic Centre at Newmarket Community Hospital, which Morgan Sindall completed in December 2024.
