Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust awarded £1.3m lighting grant

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has been granted more than £1.3m to replace lighting at St James’s University Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital.

The sum represents the Trust’s share of £74m in government grants to eighty-two NHS trusts, eight military sites, and one prison for clean energy technologies and improved energy efficiency. The sum of £1,319,310 will be used to install low energy LED lighting at St James’s and Wharfedale Hospital, helping to bring down bills and create savings that can be reinvested into frontline services.

The upgrades, which include 3,444 light replacements across both sites, are expected to make savings of £167,000 at St James’s and £95,000 at Wharfedale per year. The overall carbon savings will equate to 373 CO2 tonnes per annum.

Executive Director of Estates and Facilities at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Craige Richardson, said: “As a Trust, we’re committed to achieving net zero by 2040, and we’re thrilled to receive this funding to further our sustainability objectives set out in our Green Plan.

“These new upgrades are one of many fantastic decarbonisation measures we have put in place to reduce the environmental impact of our services, protecting health care in Leeds for the future.”
