Mueller Europe Healthcare & Life Sciences has been recognised with two major honours at the recent IHEEM Healthcare Estates Awards – Product Innovation of the Year and Healthcare Supplier of the Year.
The awards follow the newly-formed Healthcare & Life Sciences division of Mueller Europe’s first appearance as an exhibitor at Healthcare Estates, showcasing its flagship – and now award-winning – AseptiFlow water hygiene solution.

AseptiFlow was invented by Dr James Soothill, a Consultant Microbiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Splashback from healthcare drains is an acknowledged source transmission risk for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, a persistent infection prevention challenge across hospitals, hospices and care homes.
Dr Soothill used his many years of experience as a microbiologist and interest in engineering to develop a wholly new solution – a copper pipe bent throughout its length to avoid pooling and ensure that any splashing in the U-bend water could not ascend to the sink as there was no straight-line path.
This simple mechanical intervention sits below the sink and connects into the existing trap, directly controlling the pathway from trap to outlet, preventing the splashback effect and controlling the aerosol plume pathway. The added antimicrobial benefit associated with copper ‘contact killing’ further reduces the transmission risk to patients. All this is achieved without the use of any chemicals.
AseptiFlow can be installed throughout an entire hospital or just used at flash points, such as transplant wards.
