Nuffield Hospitals, the UK’s largest notfor- profit independent healthcare provider, has agreed to sell nine of its hospitals to General Healthcare Group (GHG).

Included in the sale are Nuffield Hospitals in Birmingham, Bury St Edmunds, Gerrards Cross, Harrogate, Huddersfield, Lancaster, Lincoln, North London and Nottingham, many located in areas where General Healthcare has no existing hospital facility. The hospitals will form part of BMI Healthcare, General Healthcare Group’s acute private hospital division, with the transaction set to add some 346 beds to BMI’s existing 2,400 bed UK portfolio, plus an anticipated 10% rise in the number of patients treated annually. A GHG spokeswoman said the deal should have no impact on staff at the Nuffield facilities being acquired, adding: “GHG is buying all these hospitals as a going concern, so any effect on staff, who will have access to even broader skill and knowledge bases and increased career opportunities, should be positive.”
