Engineers from County Durham-based CDS Security & Fire have completed a series of security works at QE Hospital Gateshead.
The work took place in live clinical environments, including inpatient wards and emergency care facilities, as well as offices and staff accommodation.
Engineers worked with hospital estates teams, contractors, and departmental staff to identify suitable working periods. When activity increased unexpectedly, the team stopped work and rearranged the installation.
The project included work in the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, Same Day Emergency Care Department, and Windy Nook Doctors’ Residence.
CDS surveyed each area separately and designed the work around how the space was used. New equipment also needed to operate alongside existing hospital systems while maintaining access for authorised employees.
Where projects formed part of wider refurbishment programmes, CDS coordinated with principal contractors so cabling, door equipment, and supporting infrastructure could be installed at the appropriate stage.
Rosie Abbott, owner of CDS Security & Fire, said: “Plans can change very quickly inside a working hospital. Our engineers understood that patient care would always be more important than the installation timetable.
“If a department became busier than expected, they stopped, spoke to the people working in the area and returned when it was appropriate.
“The technology matters, but good judgement, patience and communication are what allow this type of work to be completed properly in a live clinical environment.”
